Description

The disodium salt of gallein is called alizarin violet. Gallein is of little use as a simple acid dye. It has been suggested as a hematoxylin substitute when mordanted by iron alum. As with most mordant dyes, there is a strong shift in the absorption maximum, and the mordanted dye consequently stains nuclei blue violet.
